I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour. As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise. A U.S. Coast Guard patrol board encountered seven Chinese and Russian naval vessels cooperating in an exercise last year about 86 miles (138 kilometers) north of Alaska’s Kiska Island. This is relevant to many of the Caribbean SIDS which have coral-rich habitats, are highly vulnerable to environmental challenges and depend heavily on their natural marine resources for industries such as tourism and fisheries. Examples of IMO-designated PSSAs in the Caribbean include Saba Bank, Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago in Cuba and the Florida Keys. The Government of Barbados welcomed cruise ships during the early COVID-19 period of 2020, allowing them to seek safe harbour at a time when many countries were turning them away. A total of 28 cruise ships were given unprecedented permission to anchor along the west and south coasts of the island during this period (1 March – 1 September 2020). This study examines the 132 anchoring events of these cruise ships, using automatic identification system (AIS) data to determine anchored locations and track vessel swing at anchor in relation to sensitive coral-rich habitat.

As a result, the ships were told to move and on more than one occasion the coastguard was deployed to assist, resulting in the ships re-anchoring in virtually the same location7. The 100s of metres of anchor chain required to anchor such large vessels and the swing of cruise ships whilst anchored was likely unknown or perhaps overlooked when choosing these alternative anchorages. As such, another solution is needed for when marine traffic is heavy. The most effective way to prevent further damage in the future would be to prohibit cruise ships from anchoring outside of the designated Quarantine Anchorage.

Cruise ship anchors dig into the seabed and provide a contact point for the ship. Having to take a tender boat to land is a very common part of cruising. Guests are usually able to see ahead of time if the ports that they are visiting will require tendering. While this method is more straightforward and versatile for ships, it also uses up more fuel and comes at a high cost. They are typically 10 to 20 feet long, 15 to 20 feet wide, and weigh anywhere from 10 to 20 tons.

As you can see, the size is similar, although the shape of cruise ship anchors has changed quite a lot over the past 170 years. In the majority of cases, when a cruise ship is scrapped the anchor is scrapped along with the ship. There are a few examples though where cruise ship anchors have found new lives after their ship was scrapped. The third anchor is often smaller and weighs less than the primary two anchors. It’s primarily used as a backup if one of the primary anchors breaks or malfunctions. Most modern cruise ships have two anchors, with one on the port side and the other on the ship’s starboard side. While the exact frequency of inspections will depend on the particular policies of each cruise line, most anchor chains are inspected as part of the cruise ship’s regular inspection and maintenance procedures. If the draft of a cruise ship is too deep for a shallow port and waters, this prevents the cruise ship from docking. The cruise ship will have to anchor offshore in deeper waters, and passengers will have to be tendered to port.
If no fixed mooring points are available, some cruise lines will opt to use dynamic positioning systems to keep the ship idle using the ship’s engines. The bridge simply inputs the coordinates, and the system takes care of the rest. In other words, the cruise ship could still get from point A to point B, but it won’t manage to stay idle without anchors or dynamic positioning systems.
